Inclusive Economic Development
inclusive economic development toolkit | real estate development | urban planning | tranisit oriented development
MIT capstone project to design an inclusive economic development (IED) project in Brockton, MA is needed and to identify policies and practices that promote inclusivity. The development includes housing, retail space, civic space, and public space—our final design models inclusive practices.
Chapter 1, we describe how Brockton’s rapid economic and demographic transformation shapes the city’s challenges and opportunities. The chapter includes maps and visualizations that tell the story of this transformation and highlight challenges, including segregation, discrimination, and economic exclusion.
Chapter 2, we discuss why IED is crucial to the city’s future commercial success and propose specific recommendations for how the city can pursue IED in the context of its downtown redevelopment.
Chapter 3, we present renderings for a proposed phased transit-oriented development on the southwest corner of the Downtown Trout Brook Redevelopment District, located downtown on Court Street opposite of the Brockton Transit Authority and the police station.
Appendix - Toolkit of Best Practices for Inclusive Economic Development designed to be a standalone document that any municipality, including Brockton, can use to draw inspiration for IED across a broad spectrum of topics.
